"A little and a little, collected together becomes a great deal; the heap in the barn consists of single grains." -Saadi
My neighbor, friend and local artist, Deb Traun has done a few of these projects. Last year she made an american flag using hundreds of cut objects. The flag was entered into the Edina Art Center contest and won. The piece was then sold: quite an accomplishment for Deb!
Deb inspired me to begin a piece using the same collage technique as well as some little hands from different parts of my world. I took the original image, graphed it out, transferred it to a large canvas, and off we went filling in our graphic cow head. Deb and I rounded up some neighborhood kids to begin the artwork. After a few weeks with those kiddos, I took the piece to Episcopal Youth Music Camp with me that year, and found many campers enthusiastic and willing to help.
One of the beautiful things about working on a piece as a community is that everybody brings their own ideas and their individual eye. The trick is to stay flexible and just let it happen. I put the finishing touch on the work, and entered it into the juried show last year at the Edina Art Center.... success! We were accepted to our great joy.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
